Herbal Medicine: What herbal medicine can treat and how safe and effective is it?

In part I of this article we looked at what herbal medicine is and what it uses as its philosophical basis. Part II looks at what herbal medicine can be used for and its safety and effectiveness.

What can herbal medicine be used for?

Herbal medicine can be used in one of three ways:

Up until about 200 years ago, herbal extracts, teas, baths, etc., were the primary forms of treatment available to doctors. In fact Pedanius Dioscorides an ancient Greek physician, pharmacologist and botanist from Anazarbus, Cilicia, Asia Minor, wrote 'the bible' on herbs and early medicinal substances extracted from plants in the first century AD.

To this day, pharmaceutical companies still use herbal medicines in their drugs (they just don't advertise that fact). He described over 600 medicinal plants, their use and actions with respect to treating diseases.

In the early 19th century, when methods of chemical analysis first became available, scientists began extracting and modifying the active ingredients from plants. Later, chemists began making their own version of plant compounds, beginning the transition from raw herbs to synthetic pharmaceuticals. Over time, the use of herbal medicines declined in favor of pharmaceuticals.ý

A skilled herbalist is able to use medicinal plants to treat any disease known to man. Granted, some diseases such as cancer for example, are not treated easily, but are treatable with herbs. The limit is not the limitations of herbs, but the skill of the physician. And, let's face it - that's the same for any system of medicine.

In short, herbal medicine has been used since the dawn of man and is still as effective today as it ever was in treating virtually any disease safely and effectively.

What forms does herbal medicine come in?

Herbal medicines come in several forms of administration. These include:

Once a herbalist has identified the underlying reasons for the manifestation of the disease a patient is afflicted by and has worked out the herbal mixture required to address this disorder, it is then necessary to establish the best way of administering the herbal medicines.

One would logically think that taking the herbs in their liquid or pill form might be the best and easiest way to take the medicine, however, often it may not be.

Without getting into the details and chemistry of how active constituents of medicinal herbs are extracted, let's have a quick look at the ways in which herbs may be used.

Extracts and tinctures are generally made by using a certain amount of the dried or fresh herb and than mixing this with alcohol. The alcohol dissolves most of the plant's constituents and suspends them in the alcohol. This is what is basically known as a tincture.

Alcohol will extract almost all the ingredients contained in the plant material. Unlike alcohol, water will extract fewer of the ingredients. Water is a universal solvent and many of the substances contained in herbs will dissolve into the water. However, alkaloids and fats may not. If some of the alkaloids are not wanted, then a tea or sits bath (water extraction) may be preferable.

Poultices are used externally. They are prepared by crushing the plant, usually the fresh plant or parts thereof, mixing it with a base cream, honey, yoghurt or similar substance, which is then applied directly to a specific part of the body. This type of treatment is particularly effective when treating wounds, bruising, joint and bone injuries, local infections, localized skin disorders, gangrene, etc. But can also be used to treat some chronic internal diseases of organs.

In short, there are different horses for courses. In other words, the type of application will depend on the specific needs of the individual patient and their particular type of disease. For example it might not be wise to treat a patient who suffers from alcoholism and liver cirrhosis with an alcohol-based herbal mixture...

Is herbal medicine a safe form of treatment?

Herbal medicine in the hands of a qualified, experienced herbalist is very safe and has minimal risk of side effects. However, just because herbs are natural does not automatically make them safe. Remember, Arsenic is natural and deadly.

Opium from the Poppy flower is highly addictive, lead is poisonous and so are most other heavy metals, yet they are all 100% natural substances. So don't be fooled - natural is not necessarily harmless.

Having said that, herbal medicine is one of the safest forms of medicine and is very unlikely to cause harm if used as prescribed by a qualified herbalist.

Unlike pharmaceutical drugs, which are mainly synthetic, man-made substances, herbs are easily assimilated in our bodies. They are also easily eliminated and do not usually accumulate. A herbalist will also frequently change the herbs in a patient's mix as their health picture changes.

In short, herbal medicine, if prescribed by a qualified and experienced herbalist, is one of the safest forms of treatment, causing few, if any, side effects.

Ask the average American to define herbs and he or she will tell you that herbs are green leaves that have some medicinal properties. Some may even add that herbs like Thyme and Sage are used for cooking. This is how most people define herbs; which is quite good knowledge considering that most folks are ambivalent about the actual use of herbs in their own lives.
A herb (the word rhymes with ‘curb') is a plant that is grown for medicinal or culinary value.
Typically, the green leafy part of the herb is used, occasionally roots also are put to use. A culinary herb is non-woody and soft. Used for their aromatic flavor and texture, culinary herbs include bay leaf, basil, chervil, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, tarragon and thyme.
The world of medicinal herbs is even more diverse and surprising. Even the most innocuous looking leaf blade may possess a treasure trove of medicinal properties. A medicinal herb is generally a shrub or other woody plant used for therapeutic purposes. Herbalism or Phytotherapy is the practice of folk or traditional medicine that aims to cure "dis-eases" in the body using plants and the active constituents found within them.
This resurgence of interest in herbs was brought about by various systems of holistic healing. Now, more than ever before, people are beginning to realize that good health does not refer to an absence of disease. Rather, it is a balance of physical, mental, emotional and social wellness. Herbal health care is becoming increasingly popular because herbs provide natural stimulants that activate the body's own defense mechanisms.
When orthodox medicine took over the reins of mainstream health care, herbs and their medicinal values got relegated to the background. One reason could be the problem of availability. Another more important reason is that unlike a pill or a tonic, herbs usually take more time to bring about an effect.
Due to our sedentary lifestyle, processed foods and industrial advances, we have managed to discover a large number of chronic illnesses that were virtually unknown in the past. Medicines used to treat these diseases have side effects. In time, these medicines also become ineffective as the human body develops a resistance to the medicine. After battling it out for many years, practitioners of conventional medicine are finally willing to admit that herbal extracts are an effective source of healing.
Herbal medicines provide a healing system that is in tune with nature. The medicines are characterized by simplicity, depth and effectiveness. They are cost effective too. Absence of side effects also greatly enhances their allure.
Some interesting uses of herbs are:
- Chamomile tea sipped slowly throughout the day helps decrease acidity and soothes the digestive system
- Alfalfa is a highly nutritious herb as it is a natural source of vitamins and minerals.
- Valerian root can be used to treat insomnia.
- Two fresh garlic cloves taken at night increases ones resistance to flu and colds.
- Feverfew is a herb that if taken consistently, effectively reduces the frequency of migraines.
Herbs, like any drug, bring about a physiological change in the body. If taken continuously for prolonged periods, they may affect the body's natural ability to heal. The aim of herbs is to bring the body back into ‘balance' so that there is no longer any need for medicine. Herbal medicines may not be the best, pure or only form of medicine. Indeed, it should be used as a complementary medicine that helps doctors achieve the most important goal of all - that of total cure in the easiest, most effective and shortest route.

Herbal medicine, sometimes referred to as botanical medicine or herbalism, involves the use of plants, or parts of plants, to treat injuries or illnesses. This field also covers the use of herbs or botanicals to improve overall health and wellness. Herbalist, herbal medicine practitioners, traditional medicine practitioners, and Ayurvedic, homeopathic, and naturopathic healers all use herbal remedies in their practices.

Seeds, leaves, stems, bark, roots, flowers, and extracts of all of these have been used in herbal medicine over the millennia of their use. These supplemental treatments have been delivered raw, in teas and tinctures, as topical applications, in liquid forms, and in pills and capsules. In the beginning the plants were consumed raw or combined with hot water as a soup or tea. Later, the plants were dried and crushed for other uses. The plants were found in the wild and uses were often based on superstitious or visual cues. Plants were often used to treat body systems because they were shaped like that body part or because they grew in a particular area. As science began to take a closer look at herbal remedies, their use became more refined. Herbs, and other plants, are actually the precursors to many of today’s medicinal drugs. Some of the pharmaceutical medications on the market are extracts of some of these traditional herbs.

Today, many modern, and Western, medicine practitioners are beginning to look at herbal remedies for some common, and not-so common, disorders. The lower cost, and often safer use, has attracted many medical professionals. Some physicians use herbs to off-set the side effects of pharmaceuticals.

Timeline of Herbal Medicine

No one knows, for sure, when humans began using herbs for medicinal purposes. The first written record of herbal medicine use showed up in 2800 B.C. in China. Since then the use of herbs has gained, and fallen out of, favor many times in the medical field. The timeline that follows shows some of the key dates and major points in the history of herbal medicine.

2800 B.C.- The first written record of herbal medicine use showed up. (Titled the Pen Ts'ao by Shen Nung)

400 B.C.- The Greeks joined the herbal medicine game. Hippocrates stressed the ideas that diet, exercise and overall happiness formed the foundation of wellness.

50 A.D.- The Roman Empire spread herbal medicine around the Empire, and with it the commerce of cultivating herbs.

200 A.D.- The first classification system that paired common illnesses with their herbal remedy appeared. This was prepared by the herbal practitioner Galen.

800 A.D.- Monks took over the herbal field with herbal gardens at most monasteries and infirmaries for the sick and injured.

1100 A.D.- The Arab world became a center of medicinal influence. Physician Avicenna wrote the Canon of Medicine, which gave mention to herbal medicines.

1200 A.D.- Black Death spread across Europe and herbal medicines were used along side “modern” methods such as bleeding, purging, arsenic and mercury with equal, or better, results.

1500 A.D.- Herbal medicine and herbalists were promoted and supported by Henry VII and the Parliament, due to the large number of untrained apothecaries giving substandard care.

1600 A.D.- Herbs were used in treating the poor, while extracts of plant, minerals, and animals (the “drugs”), were used for the rich. The English Physician, an herbal explaining the practice of herbal medicine, was written during this time.

1700 A.D.- Herbal medicine got another high profile endorsement from Preacher Charles Wesley. He advocated for sensible eating, good hygiene and herbal treatments for healthy living.

1800 A.D.- Pharmaceuticals began to hit the scene and herbal treatments took a back seat. As side effects from the drugs began to be documented, herbal remedies came into favor again. The National Association of Medical Herbalists was formed, and later renamed the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH.)

1900 A.D.- lack of availability of drugs during World War I increased the use of herbal medicines again. After the war pharmaceutical production increased and penicillin was discovered. Herbal practitioners had their rights to dispense their medications taken away and then reinstated. The British Herbal Medicine Association was founded and produced the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia. People began to express the concern over the large number of side effects and environmental impact of the drugs of the 1950s.

2000 A.D.- EU took action on regulation and testing of herbal medicines similar to those used for pharmaceuticals.

Herbal medicines have been documented for almost 4000 years. These medicines have survived real world testing and thousands of years of human testing. Some medicines have been discontinued due to their toxicity, while others have been modified or combined with additional herbs to offset side effects. Many herbs have undergone changes in their uses. Studies conducted on the herbs and their effects keep changing their potential uses.

Herbal Medicine Today

Herbal medicines are still in use today. In some respects they have gained a new momentum in the medical field. As many people seek alternative treatments and begin to check out traditional, and Eastern, medicine, herbs are becoming more popular. As physicians seek new treatments for many common illnesses they are beginning to revisit the traditional remedies, using herbal medicines.

Pharmaceutical medications, with their potential for harmful side effects and addiction, are becoming less popular. People are seeking alternatives to the modern medical interventions. Improving, and maintaining, health naturally is a very popular approach to overall wellness.

The herbs used today are generally cultivated for those purposes. Very few herbs are harvested from the wild, with the exception of a few still found in the rainforests and higher elevations. The cultivation of herbs for medicinal uses is a large field and more people are beginning to plant their own herb gardens. Many monasteries continue to grow large herbal gardens within their walls.

Elderly people also metabolize medications differently, and generally are on more medications, and therefore must also exercise caution when trying new herbal treatments. Underlying ailments that may affect the body’s ability to process or absorb medications are also an issue.

Herbal medicine has enjoyed a long, and colorful, history. From the early Chinese Empires to modern physicians’ offices, herbal medicines have continued to be a part of the medical field. Herbal treatments have matured throughout history, along with the methods of delivering them. In the beginning, the herbs were used in a hit or miss method and required major events to change their use. Research and clinical trials have helped to shape the field of medicine, and the future for herbal medicine looks bright.

Herbs or medicinal plants have a long history in treating disease and health disorders. In traditional Chinese medicine, for example, the written history of herbal medicine goes back over 2000 years and herbalists in the West have used "weeds" equally long to treat that which ails us. We are all familiar with the virtues of Garlic, Chamomile, Peppermint, Lavender, and other common herbs. Interest in medicinal herbs is on the rise again and the interest is primarily from the pharmaceutical industry, which is always looking for 'new drugs' and more effective substances to treat diseases, for which there may be no or very few drugs available. Considering the very long traditional use of herbal medicines and the large body of evidence of their effectiveness, why is it that we are not generally encouraged to use traditional herbal medicine, instead of synthetic, incomplete copies of herbs, called drugs, considering the millions of dollars being spent looking for these seemingly elusive substances? Herbs are considered treasures when it comes to ancient cultures and herbalists, and many so-called weeds are worth their weight in gold. Dandelion, Comfrey, Digitalis (Foxglove), the Poppy, Milk Thistle, Stinging nettle, and many others, have well-researched and established medicinal qualities that have few if any rivals in the pharmaceutical industry. Many of them in fact, form the bases of pharmaceutical drugs. Research into the medicinal properties of such herbs as the humble Dandelion is currently being undertaken by scientists at the Royal Botanical Gardens, in Kew, west London, believe it could be the source of a life-saving drug for cancer patients. Early tests suggest that it could hold the key to warding off cancer, which kills tens of thousands of people every year. Their work on the cancer-beating properties of the dandelion, which also has a history of being used to treat warts, is part of a much larger project to examine the natural medicinal properties of scores of British plants and flowers. Professor Monique Simmonds, head of the Sustainable Uses of Plants Group at Kew, said: "We aren't randomly screening plants for their potential medicinal properties, we are looking at plants which we know have a long history of being used to treat certain medical problems." "We will be examining them to find out what active compounds they contain which can treat the illness." Unfortunately, as is so often the case, this group of scientists appears to be looking for active ingredients, which can later be synthesized and then made into pharmaceutical drugs. This is not the way herbs are used traditionally and their functions inevitably change when the active ingredients are used in isolation. That's like saying that the only important part of a car is the engine - nothing else needs to be included... So, why is there this need for isolating the 'active ingredients'? As a scientist, I can understand the need for the scientific process of establishing the fact that a particular herb works on a particular disease, pathogen or what ever, and the need to know why and how it does so. But, and this is a BIG but, as a doctor of Chinese medicine I also understand the process of choosing and prescribing COMBINATIONS of herbs, which have a synergistic effect to treat not just the disease, but any underlying condition as well as the person with the disease - That is a big difference and not one that is easily tested using standard scientific methodologies. Using anecdotal evidence, which after all has a history of thousands of years, seems to escape my esteemed colleagues all together. Rather than trying to isolate the active ingredient(s), why not test these herbs, utilizing the knowledge of professional herbalists, on patients in vivo, using the myriad of technology available to researchers and medical diagnosticians to see how and why these herbs work in living, breathing patients, rather than in a test tube or on laboratory rats and mice (which, by the way, are not humans and have a different, although some what similar, physiology to us...). I suspect, that among the reasons for not following the above procedure is that the pharmaceutical companies are not really interested in the effects of the medicinal plants as a whole, but rather in whether they can isolate a therapeutic substance which can then be manufactured cheaply and marketed as a new drug - and of course that's where the money is... The problem with this approach is however, that medicinal plants like Comfrey, Dandelion and other herbs usually contain hundreds if not thousands of chemical compounds that interact, yet many of which are not yet understood and cannot be manufactured. This is why the manufactured drugs, based on so-called active ingredients, often do not work or produce side effects. Aspirin is a classic case in point. Salicylic acid is the active ingredient in Aspirin tablets, and was first isolated from the bark of the White Willow tree. It is a relatively simple compound to make synthetically, however, Aspirin is known for its ability to cause stomach irritation and in some cases ulceration of the stomach wall. The herbal extract from the bark of the White Willow tree generally does not cause stomach irritation due to other, so called 'non-active ingredients' contained in the bark, which function to protect the lining of the stomach thereby preventing ulceration of the stomach wall. Ask yourself, which would I choose - Side effects, or no site effects? - It's a very simple answer. Isn't it? So why then are herbal medicines not used more commonly and why do we have pharmaceutical impostors stuffed down our throats? The answer is, that there's little or no money in herbs for the pharmaceutical companies. They, the herbs, have already been invented, they grow easily, they multiply readily and for the most part, they're freely available. Further more, correctly prescribed and formulated herbal compounds generally resolve the health problem of the patient over a period of time, leaving no requirement to keep taking the preparation - that means no repeat sales... no ongoing prescriptions... no ongoing problem. Pharmaceuticals on the other hand primarily aim to relieve symptoms - that means: ongoing consultations, ongoing sales, ongoing health problems - which do you think is a more profitable proposition...? Don't get me wrong, this is not to say that all drugs are impostors or that none of the pharmaceutical drugs cure diseases or maladies - they do and some are life-preserving preparations and are without doubt invaluable. However, herbal extracts can be similarly effective, but are not promoted and are highly under-utilized. The daily news is full of 'discoveries' of herbs found to be a possible cure of this or that, as in the example of Dandelion and its possible anti-cancer properties. The point is, that these herbs need to be investigated in the correct way. They are not just 'an active ingredient'. They mostly have hundreds of ingredients and taking one or two in isolation is not what makes medicinal plants work. In addition, rarely are herbal extracts prescribed by herbalists as singles (a preparation which utilizes only one herb). Usually herbalists mix a variety of medicinal plants to make a mixture, which addresses more than just the major symptoms. In Chinese medicine for example there is a strict order of hierarchy in any herbal prescription, which requires considerable depth of knowledge and experience on the physicians part. The fact that the primary or principle herb has active ingredients, which has a specific physiological effect, does not mean the other herbs are not necessary in the preparation. This is a fact seemingly ignored by the pharmaceutical industry in its need to manufacture new drugs that can control disease. Knowing that medicinal plants are so effective, that these plants potentially hold the key to many diseases, are inexpensive and have proven their worth time and time again over millennia, why is it that herbal medicine is still not in the forefront of medical treatments, and is considered by many orthodox medical professionals and pharmaceutical companies as hocus-pocus.... hmmm.

Herb Medicine becomes more popular each day as the benefits of using herbs becomes available to the general public. The cost of mainstream healthcare skyrockets and consumers pay out huge sums of money to the established companies that provide the drugs. The information on herb medicine is sometimes discounted by the general consumers. The first thought a consumer might have when this information is reviewed might be of witch doctors and the sorcerers. This should not be the case since there is now much information available based on scientific research and results. Governmental agencies including the Food and Drug Administration now provide proper guidance on the use of herbs for medicinal purposes. The experts that offer the advice on the use of herbs as medicine are certified and industry recognized for their expertise.
The use of herbs as medicine is complementary or as alternative medicine. Most people who have experienced the benefits of herb medicine use these in addition to the available mainstream medical treatments. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration issued information on the use of green tea for medicinal use and the potential benefits of drinking green tea that helps reduce the risk of cancer. The study was based on scientific research and the report issued included the information from these studies. Other information on the use of herbs as medicine comes from private study groups who employ traditional, scientific research to provide the information to the public.
Consumers Should Study Results Carefully When Using Herbs as Medicine
Some advocates of the use of herbs as medicine do not use the scientific information available. And some herbs used as medicine do not have scientific information to substantiate the benefits it claims. Some of the herbs available for medicinal purposes have been used successfully by consumers and their enthusiasm and testimony about the benefits encourage others to use certain herbs. Without the scientific information on a particular medicinal herb, the benefits are dubious. Maybe these substances do work and maybe they do not. There is no way of validating the benefits without the proper research. At times, people experience benefits for other reasons not necessarily related to a certain herb treatment.
The companies that produce herbs as medicine have been successful just like their counterparts that produce mainstream drug products. Some of this success has been due to their advertising and enthusiastic consumers. There are certain herbal substances that are known to suppress the symptoms of the common cold and depression. The effects of these herbal substances are not always backed by scientific research. That does not mean that these are not effective herb remedies, but the research has not been conducted to prove the results it claims. Consumers should look carefully at all the information available on the medicines that they use to maintain a healthy life style.

The roots of the Ashwagandha plant, also known by the botanical Latin name of Withania somnifera, are what are typically sold as medicinal herbs. Certified organic and kosher versions of ashwagandha are also available online and at better herbal stores.Other common names for ashwagandha include Indian ginseng, winter cherry, ajagandha, kanaje hindi and samm al ferakh. These dried herbs are in the same plant family, known in Latin as solanaceae, as the common tomato plant. The plant grows as a five-foot tall evergreen shrub that produces yellow flowers like the tomato plant and small red fruit. It grows well in the climate of India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. As medicinal herbs, ashwagandha is used in India as a tranquilizer. It may act as an abortifacient, and thus should not be used if you are pregnant. It may help as an antibacterial, and may help to increase libido. Ashwagandha may have an astringent quality, and may help body ducts to clear obstructions. Medicinal herbs such as ashwagandha may help to increase urine flow, and may help to increase drowsiness. These dried herbs are commonly used as a tonic to generally improve health. The berries of this plant are used in vegetarian cheese making. They cause the liquid to coagulate and form cheese curds. This is just one of many medicinal herbs that you will find available for sale online from fine herbal retailers. Other herbal products are available. These include herbs and spices suitable for culinary purposes. Herbs are often used as the main ingredient in many fine teas, including black teas, green teas and chai teas. Herbs are also used for the production of essential oils. These oils are used in aromatherapy products, and diffuser devices. The diffusers, which may run on electricity, or the light generated from a light bulb or candle, and even body heat, help to spread the wonderful fragrance of the herbal oils you select throughout any room you are in, and may help to soothe your spirits. Personal care products often utilize herbs as part of their ingredient list. They can include such items as bath blends that scent the air and soften your skin in the bath, or cosmetics, perfumes, body lotions, toothpastes and others. The home can also benefit from dried herbs, which can be used in the laundry room in different ways. Lavender or citrus leaves can go into a cloth bag that is tossed in with the damp laundry in your dryer to impart their fragrant scents. Soaps are also made that utilize the scent of herbs, and these and other products can be procured from herbal stores online.

There is nothing worse than to reach into your cabinet and expect to find the dried herbs you need there, only to realize that you have run out. Purchasing dried bulk herbs, such as echinacea herb, helps you to save money and ensures that you always have your medicinal herbs available when you want them. What is Echinacea herb?Echinacea herb, which is typically sold as echinacea capsules from herb purveyors online, comes from the Echinacea purpurea and Echinacea angustifolia plants. Echinacea purpurea is a common garden flower known as Coneflower. The flowers of this herbaceous perennial plant are produced during the summer months and look like large lavender daisies with dark or colored spiny centers, and are a favorite with insects. The seedheads in wintertime, if left in the garden, make wonderful bird food as well. Echinacea angustifolia is commonly known as the Narrow-leaf Coneflower. Like Echinacea purpurea, Echinacea angustifolia has lavender-colored, daisy-like flowers with reddish-orange spiny centers. What can Echinacea capsules do?There are several things that Echinacea capsules may be able to do for you in terms of health. Traditional herbal medical practices have used Echinacea herb to improve the health of the skin when burns, sores or acne are present. Echinacea is thought to have immunostimulating capabilities. It may help to reduce the chances of catching a cold, and if a cold is already present, it may help to reduce the duration of the illness because it may strengthen the body's immune system. It may also help with other respiratory conditions including hay fever and sinusitis. Echinacea was also used by Native American tribes as a treatment for snakebites, as well insect bites and stings. Medicinal herbs, such as Echinacea, are available in several different forms from herb merchants online. Echinacea capsules, cut and sifted and powdered forms are available made from the plant as well as the root. Organic echinacea may also be purchased, and echinacea is also available that has been certified kosher.Organic echinacea capsules are made from organic plants. In order for plants, including these herbs, to be listed for sale as organic, they must be grown without the use of synthetic chemical pesticides or fertilizers. The ground upon which the plants grow must not have had synthetic chemicals applied to it for at least three years, and sometimes longer, prior to the production of organic crops. For products that have been certified organic, you will see a green and white emblem that states, "USDA Organic," referring to the United States Department of Agriculture, the governmental body which does the farm inspections and certifies products as organic.

Bilberry is related to the Blueberry plant, in that both come from the Latin plant genus Vaccinium. Bilberry's full Latin botanical name is Vaccinium myrtillus. Bilberry goes by several common names, including myrtle blueberry, whinberry, blaeberry and whortleberry. Like blueberries, Bilberries can be eaten, and their fruit is round, sweet and blue-colored like the blueberry, but they are smaller in circumference. The fruit makes wonderful jam and pie filling. They are commonly found in cold Northern countries including Norway, Iceland, and Britain, as well as Northern Asia and Macedonia. Bilberry is available in several different forms. Bilberry is commonly sold as bilberries whole, bilberry capsules, and bilberry leaf. The bilberry leaf is available in three forms: cut and sifted, powdered and in capsules. Organic bilberry leaf is also available. Bilberry leaf has had several common uses in folk medicine, including treatment of the intestines. In studies done on rats, bilberries whole was used to prevent macular degeneration and cataracts. However, a full scientific study on humans has not yet been conducted. Anthocyanin pigments are abundantly found in bilberries extract and bilberry capsules. Anthocyanins are antioxidants, which help to keep cells in the human body from oxidizing and becoming damaged. As an herb containing antioxidants, bilberry capsules may help to reduce the risk for heart complications and cancer. The leaves, which go into bilberry capsules, may help as an antiseptic, may also help as an astringent, may help with kidney problems and to increase urine flow. Bilberries may also be made into a tonic to generally and slowly improve health. The leaves of the bilberry can also be used as a fabric dye, giving the fabric a green tint.Organic bilberries have been specially grown and processed in order to achieve organic certification by the United States Department of Agriculture. The plants that reach the standard of organic must not be grown with any synthetic chemical pesticides or fertilizers; neither must either of these be used on the land on which the crop is grown. Certain bilberry products are also available that have been certified kosher.Online herb stores stock a wide variety of medicinal herbs, including bilberry, and other types of herbs. You will find dried herbs and spices perfect for cooking up dishes in a variety of cuisines. Dried herbs also can be used in personal care products such as cosmetics and body lotions. Herbal extracts and essential oils are often added to laundry soaps and rinses to impart wonderful fragrance. One should always take care when contemplating medicinal herbs. No herbs have been thoroughly evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration, and thus cannot be considered medicine by FDA standards. If you have a health concern, seek the advice of your health care provider right away.

Streamy eyes, runny nose, ceaseless itching, body covered with angry rashes, incessant coughing – if you are suffering from one or more of these symptoms often, then you are likely sensitive to allergens. And though you must be taking medicines to help you fight the allergic reaction, you might be dissatisfied with their efficacy. This is because most western medicines treating allergies just scratch the surface of the problem. They hide the symptoms for a short period and do not tackle the root of the cause.

The usual treatment for allergies is to block the exaggerated reaction of the immune system to the allergen. This is done with medical preparations containing strong doses of steroids that are available in both oral and topical forms. Conventional treatments are ineffective in the sense that they can’t provide a permanent solution to the problem. Moreover the patient runs a serious risk of suffering from serious side effects. Topical creams containing steroids can eat into your skin making it thin. Oral pills can lead to weight gain, drowsiness and stomach upsets.

It is due to these reasons that you should seriously consider alternative courses of treatment to help you win your lifelong battle against allergies. At Longevity Herbs you can find natural Chinese herbs that have proved to be very effective in mitigating the effects of allergies. These allergy herbs work on the same principle as most Chinese traditional herbs like Chinese Cordyceps and Reishi Mushroom. These are immune herbs that boost the human immune system thereby helping it withstand the effects of allergens. In Longevity Herbs, you will find several other Chinese traditional herbs like Jiao Gu Lan which is a detox herbal brew, which when used with our special herbal tea blend helps in detoxifying the body. It also increases the production of bodily fluids and helps fight cold and other respiratory problems. Allergy herbs like Jiao Gu Lan act as preventive measures and help in warding off asthma and bronchial complications.

Both traditional Chinese medicine herbs and homeopathic remedies are perfect for providing soothing relief during an allergic reaction. Allergy herbs like Xin Yi San, which is a sinus formula made from magnolia flower, Angelica and licorice and potent herbs. This Chinese Herb is very effective for fighting congestion and allergy attacks.

Chinese herbal medicine has a number of Allergy Herbs that are better in every conceivable way of what western medicine has to offer. So do visit www.longevityherbs.com to permanently bid goodbye to your allergic reactions.
